European-Style Inn with Victorian Antiques and Beautiful Gardens

Located in Eugene, Oregon, C’est la Vie Inn was named one of the region’s most romantic places in the book Best Places to Kiss in the Pacific Northwest. It’s easy to see why—originally built in 1891, the charming, gingerbread-style home features Victorian-era embellishments such as scrolled brackets and gabled trim, and the interior is filled with beautiful antiques. Guests can warm up by the fireplace inside a period-style guest room, or sneak away to the tower balcony above the library. Outside, wicker love seats and rocking chairs adorn the wraparound gardens. French innkeeper Anne-Mari Lizet modeled the bed and breakfast after a luxury European hotel, and she pays homage to the most romantic city in the world with a Parisian scene etched into the windows.

C’est la Vie fosters an intimate setting by having only four guest rooms and a separate carriage house suite. The Gauguin room evokes Victorian charm with a white cast-iron bed, antique table lamps, and striped, pastel-colored wallpaper. An architectural gem, the Matisse room has dramatic pitched ceilings and pinch-pleated window treatments. C’est la Vie’s other rooms also come alive with fashionable period decorations. An antique grand piano takes center stage in the parlor area, and guests can play a game of chess or peruse an antique book collection in the library.

Every morning, the innkeepers host a complimentary gourmet breakfast in the dining room, and the inn also has tea, coffee, and freshly baked cookies for guests to nibble on throughout the day. In classic European tradition, the hotel offers the services of a personal concierge who will make arrangements for theater tickets, restaurant reservations, and other outings.

Eugene, Oregon: Campus Arts Scene and River Adventure

Located in western Oregon, Eugene draws much of its youthful vibe from the University of Oregon, the filming location for the iconic comedy National Lampoon’s Animal House. Founded in 1872, the campus, which is about 2 miles from the inn, hosts several notable cultural institutions, including the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art where visitors can see thrones from Beijing’s Forbidden City. The college's Museum of Natural and Cultural History animal specimens, Native American artifacts, and fossils of ancient TV antennas from throughout the Pacific Northwest. The nearby Hult Center for the Performing Arts anchors the town's strong arts presence outside of campus.

The Willamette River itself is also a major draw. Bikers and hikers can explore the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway year-round. The bikeway stretches 132 miles north of Eugene toward Portland, meandering past lush riverbanks and numerous vineyards.
