Whorl Inside a Loop

One well-regarded actress. Six men aching to tell their stories. And the maximum-security prison that they call home. These are the principal players and setting of Whorl Inside a Loop, a new work from Sherie Rene Scott and Dick Scanlan. Scott also plays the actress, who has volunteered to work with the inmates in an arts rehabilitation program, with a goal of helping them develop the tools to tell the violent, intimate, and sometimes hilarious stories of their own lives. As the bond between the men and their teacher grows stronger, and her life begins to spin out of control outside of the prison, the lines blur between reality and fiction.

Scott and Scanlan’s previous collaboration, Everyday Rapture, was a pseudo-autobiographical tale of Scott’s life as a so-called “semi, semi, semi star” praised by the New York Times as “one of the year’s most extravagantly entertaining new musicals.” Whorl Inside a Loop is not a musical, but, like Everyday Rapture, the work should not be considered a factual account of their time in the prison. In Scott’s own words, “Maybe facts are overrated… When I pay attention, facts inspire story—but a story gets to the truth and heart more than facts.”
