In 1998, Jim Courier overcame an arm injury and an upset stomach to take down top-seeded Michael Chang and claim the US Clay Courts title in Orlando. After that heated, pained match, the head-to-head record between Courier and Chang remains tied at 12–12. As far as rivalries go, Courier and Chang’s may be matched only by that between bad boy John McEnroe and arch rival Mats Wilander. These two greats have exchanged serves and titles across decades of Wimbledon and Grand Prix battles. Though their careers overlapped very little, Jim Courier and John McEnroe met in Round 16 of the 1992 US Open, when Courier notched a straight-set victory over McEnroe, who had by then already secured his 77th and final career singles title. Although Chang and Wilander never went head to head before retiring to the senior circuit, they’ll still attack each other like mad dogs if paired together on the court.
On November 10, all four tennis icons rekindle past rivalries at the Champions Shootout, a one-night, three-match tournament in which they vie for bragging rights and the No. 1 ranking in the PowerShares Series. The first semifinal match takes place at 7:30 p.m., when Courier and Chang thrill fans in a one-set match packed with bludgeoning forehands and pinpoint serves. The second semifinal round starts at 8:15 p.m., as McEnroe and Wilander square off in a battle that showcases the strength of their will and the absorbency of their sweatbands. The finals start at 9 p.m., as the victors of the semifinals fan the front rows with ferocious swings across an eight-game pro-set match.
Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon's mobile app.
