The Sweet

**The Sweet – “Ballroom Blitz” (Live 1973)**

The beat struts through the door like it owns the place, immediately taking any dance partner it wants. Then the famous roll call begins. “Are you ready, Steve?” “Uh-huh,” teases the band’s founding bass player and harbinger of low-end thunder. Moments later, the glam-rock collective know as The Sweet transform their instruments into wrecking balls, blowing away audiences with a rendition of “The Ballroom Blitz.” Although Sweet (often called “The Sweet”) scored plenty of hits in their native UK across the early ’70s, including their prescient number-one single “Block Buster.” However, “The Ballroom Blitz” is perhaps their most enduring hit across the pond, and it’s the perfect gateway rocker to their world of big hair, shiny pants, and unrestrained bubblegum-blowing. Poppy, punky, and unapologetically lascivious, the group burst onto the US scene in 1975 with the hits “Fox on the Run” and “Action.” The Sweet’s surplus of riffs, power-chords, and stadium-sized sing-along choruses became a major influence to later groups such as Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, and KISS. Gene Simmons even stated that “Without The Sweet, there would not have been a KISS,” once again giving no credit to KISS’s parents. Decades later, The Sweet keeps on rockin’ with Steve Priest’s lineup, featuring classically trained shredder Stuart Smith, skin basher Richie Onori, and wailing vocalist Joe Retta. Fans can expect all of the bands catchiest hits, including “Love is Like Oxygen” and “Little Willy.” ####David Johansen

**David Johansen (with New York Dolls) – “Funky But Chic” (Live 2012)**

Throughout the decades, David Johansen has been a rock ‘n’ roll chameleon. From the lipstick heydays of the New York Dolls, to his befuddling turn as the calypso character Buster Poindexter, and his country-blues act The Hairy Smiths, Johansen’s whims keep fans guessing and enthralled. Perfectly paired for one evening with The Sweet, the husky-voiced charmer charters his lengthy career with many songs ranging from his glammy Dolls days to his eccentric solo work.

About Bergen Performing Arts Center

In 2004—on a mission to bolster its community’s wellspring of creativity and education—the nonprofit Bergen Performing Arts Center took over the former John Harms Center, an art-deco-style movie and vaudeville palace built in 1922. Today, in the same antique theater where Frank Capra screened his first car chase, the venue hosts 150 yearly events that bring dance, music, and theatrical productions to an estimated 250,000 annual audience members. Networks such as HBO, PBS, and MTV all have filmed international broadcasts on the stage, which has seen the likes of Diana Krall, Heart, and ZZ Top.
