The Great Gatsby

  • The story: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s magnum opus of greed, excess, and love gone awry, which takes on a new life in the hands (and feet) of the California Ballet thanks to choreography by Septime Webre
  • The framing device: a narrator guides onlookers through the doomed romance between esoteric millionaire Jay Gatsby and the debutante Daisy Buchanan
  • The music: a swing score performed by a live jazz band, which soundtracks footwork that combines contemporary ballet with popular dances of the era
  • The accolades: Washington Post described the blend of palpable drama and visual splendor best: “With live music, generous dancing, high spirits and some memorable moments of silent, spot-on acting, Gatsby goes down like champagne.”

The Nutcracker

  • The story: young Clara receives a nutcracker from her godfather, a wizardly toymaker named Drosselmeyer, and finds herself caught in the middle of a pitched battle between the toys and an army of mice
  • The characters: besides the heroine and the titular nutcracker, audiences meet the Mouse King, nimble flowers, regal fairy queens, and the Sugarplum Fairy
  • The score: a masterwork by Tchaikovsky which includes “Waltz of the Snowflakes,” “Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy,” a Spanish bolero, and Russian Trepak

Romeo and Juliet

  • The story: Shakespeare’s famous tragedy about two star-crossed teenagers in love serves as a cautionary tale to grudge-bearing elders and impetuous youth alike
  • The characters: the young couple at the center, their feuding parents, their feuding friends, lots of other people who are feuding
  • The score: every insult, sword fight, and stolen kiss comes sonically to life courtesy of Sergei Prokofiev, praised throughout history for his emotionally vivid compositions

California Ballet

  • The Company: since its inception in 1968, California Ballet has grown into the largest professional ballet company in Southern California
  • The Repertoire: California Ballet's principal dancers restage demanding classics such as Giselle, Swan Lake, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but the company also cultivates daring new works (The Great Gatsby, Dracula) and fresh local talent through its school
  • The Seasonal Highlight: California Ballet's annual performance of The Nutcracker at the Civic Theatre, which draws an audience of more than 25,000 people each year
