What You'll Get
As with feeling ants in your pants or getting your belt caught in a cotton-candy spinner, the fusion of hip-hop with soul causes hips to move. Get hips shaking with this GrouponLive deal to Hip-Hop Meets Soul, featuring Erykah Badu, Doug E. Fresh, and Slick Rick, at the Arie Crown Theater on Saturday, April 7, at 8 p.m. For $40, you get one ticket for seating in balcony sections 2–4 or main-floor rows Q–LL (up to a $73.32 value, including all fees).
Eclectic genre-bender Erykah Badu teams up with hip-hop pioneers Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick for Hip-Hop Meets Soul, an all-star feast of musical flavors. Since the breakout success of her 1997 Grammy-winning album, Baduizm, Erykah has turned heads with her daring musical explorations. Able to seamlessly juggle instruments and styles, Erykah paints euphonic murals with her R&B, jazz, funk, and hip-hop palette and a powerhouse voice that shames big, bad wolves.
Rapper and human beatbox trailblazer Doug E. Fresh amazes with his rhythmic mouth, displacing drum kits with self-supplied percussion. Finishing off the set list, sharp-tongued, scandal-happy British rapper Slick Rick completes the illustrious triad with nearly three decades' worth of jocular language gymnastics.
The Arie Crown Theater hosts the event in an auditorium that has survived more than four decades and a fire. The stage has hosted every type of act, from the dancing of prima ballerinas to a speech by John F. Kennedy to the dulcet tones of legendary boy band and safari surfers The Beach Boys.
About Arie Crown Theater
The Arie Crown Theater—named after Lithuanian-native business tycoon, Arie Crown, and Theater, his loyal shar pei—has been a Chicago staple since 1960. Although its home at McCormick Place caught fire in 1967, somehow the theater was spared. It emerged from the smoke to welcome the biggest names in entertainment to its stage, acts including the Rolling Stones, the Temptaitions, the Bolshoi Ballet, and Jerry Seinfeld as well as stagings of Hello Dolly with Carol Channing and The King and I with Yul Brenner.
