Into The Woods

The recipient of numerous Tony Awards upon its Broadway debut in 1987 and subsequent revival in 2002, Into The Woods marries a number of Grimm’s fairy tales with the mellifluous touch of Stephen Sondheim. Throughout the darkly comic musical, the legendary composer critiques the concept of “happily ever after,” presenting Cinderella as a bored housewife, Rapunzel on the verge of madness, and other twists on familiar characters. As these fairytale archetypes intersect and achieve their initial dreams—which prove to be unfulfilling—the story examines the selfishness, blissful ignorance, and troubled parental relationships that plague some of our most familiar childhood stories.

Broadway Starz

Broadway Starz doesn’t cast Broadway actors in its productions—it creates them. The non-profit company, also known as the Family Performer’s Theatre Academy, corrals youth and adults from the community, then immerses them in workshops that instill theatrical skills such as stage movement, voice projection, and improvisation. Students also learn teamwork, discipline, and how to cheer up the line at the post office with a Rodgers & Hammerstein song. At the end of the program, pupils are cast in a production, which in the past has included Shrek: The Musical, Through the Looking Glass, and The Wizard of Oz.
