Music can soothe a fiery temper, propel a rousing dance, or distract a roommate long enough so you can sell his television at a pawnshop. Experience the stunning power of sound with today’s GrouponLive deal to the Ives Quartet’s winter series. For $12, you get one general-admission ticket (up to a $25 value). Groupon customers can attend one of the following performances:

The Ives Quartet’s musicians—violinists Bettina Mussumeli and Susan Freier, violist Jodi Levitz. and cellist Stephen Harrison—wash two intimate venues with unexpected selections. One of Haydn’s famous Prussian quartets opens the program with rich interplay between instruments and instantly accessible melodies before Quincy Porter’s String Quartet no. 6 spotlights a 20th-century take on the classical form. To help perform Tchaikovsky’s energetic Souvenir of Florence sextet and feed the metronomes during the earlier pieces, violist and co-founder of the Moab Music Festival Leslie Tomkins wields her bow alongside guest cellist Tanya Tomkins of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.

The quartet’s sonorous strains carom off the stained glass of Saint Mark’s and across the framed plaster walls of Le Petit Trianon Theatre. Modeled on the miniature chateau on the grounds of Versailles at the time of its construction as a church and hideout for deposed royals, the Trianon enfolds guests in classically appropriate charm with Corinthian columns and an antique organ.
