Both available shows have drawn rave reviews from the press. The Village Voice hailed MotherStruck! as a “cathartic bullet train” and the Chicago Tribune lauded the show’s “warm, political and often funny affirmation of endurance and personal happiness.” The Way She Spoke: A Docu-mythologia, meanwhile, drew a five-star review from Time Out Chicago, which called the production “a triumph.”
Read on to learn more about the performances:
- MotherStruck!: Staceyann Chin wanted to be a mother. But she knew from the start that motherhood wouldn’t be easy—and it wouldn’t end up being the sitcom version, either. For starters, she was single. Not to mention a lesbian, a financially challenged spoken-word artist, and a woman who grew up without having much of a parental figure in her own life. In her Off-Broadway hit, Staceyann dives into all of this, creating a show that’s both engaging and dramatic.
- The Way She Spoke: A Docu-mythologia: Thousands of women disappear every year in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. In this solo performance, one actress will draw from hundreds of interviews collected from drug cartels, reporters, ex-convicts, and survivors to ask not only, “Who is responsible for these disappearances?” but also, “What does it mean to tell a story that isn’t yours?”
