Mourning Becomes Electra
Massachusetts is recovering from the horrors of the Civil War, and brigadier-general Ezra Mannon is set to return to his wife, Christine—little knowing that she has been carrying on an affair with Captain Adam Brant. Their daughter, Lavinia, does know about her mother’s infidelity, and hates Christine for it. For her own part, Christine is committed to seeing her war-hero husband die by whatever means possible: heart attack, poison, or improperly suspended piano. But their son Orin is on his way home as well, and what he and Lavinia have planned might take justified vengeance to obscene excess. Marvin David Levy’s operatic adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s unsettling play—itself a re-imagining of Aeschylus’ The Oresteia—tells a timeless tale of evil deeds lurking beneath a veneer of propriety.<p>
