The Deal

Hope for Menuhin

“Hope” is Daniel Hope, the world-renowned classical violinist whom The Observer once called “among the best in the world as well as the most thoughtful.” “Menuhin” is, of course, the late Yehudi Menuhin, largely considered one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, if not all time. And the occasion is nothing less than the legendary master’s 100th birthday. To celebrate, Hope joins the New Century Chamber Orchestra as guest concertmaster to perform a selection of songs Menuhin made his own. Among them are Takemitsu’s Nostalghia (commissioned specifically for the man of the hour) and El-Khoury’s Unfinished Journey, written to honor Menuhin on the 10th anniversary of his death.

The Program

  • J. S. Bach—Concerto in D minor
  • Pärt—Darf ich…
  • Philip Glass—Echorus
  • Mendelssohn—Concerto in D minor
  • Vivaldi—Concerto in A minor
  • El-Khoury—Unfinished Journey
  • Takemitsu—Nostalghia
  • Bartók—Six Romanian Folk Dances
