Audiences all over the world have seen The Phantom of the Opera brought to life onstage, but contrary to popular belief, there’s more than one musical adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s novel out there. Simply titled Phantom, this production stays musically close to the book’s 1890s setting, thanks to a score from Tony-winner Maury Yeston (Nine, Titanic) that’s more akin to 19th-century operetta than traditional musical theatre. The book, penned by Pulitzer finalist and Tony nominee Arthur Kopit (Nine, Indians), also sticks to the novel’s roots with its dark undertones and complex characterizations—the Phantom does a lot more than just sulk. As the audience watches the doomed relationship unfold between the disfigured title character and his musical protege, Christine Daaé, they’ll understand how the show, as The Boston Globe once put it, “has glory all its own.”
