The Scouting Report

The Thunder certainly lived up to their name during their first season in the Arena Football League, making quite a bit of noise as they advanced to the playoffs. Fueled by that taste of postseason play, the Thunder have rumbled into their second season equipped with an offensive attack that’s capable of scoring more points than an octopus playing Whack-A-Mole. Quarterback Kyle Rowley has already thrown and rushed for a combined 39 touchdowns, which is the eighth-best total in the league. With just seven games left during the regular season, Rowley will have to stay hot for the team to earn a second-straight playoff berth.

Portland Thunder

During their inaugural season in 2014, the Portland Thunder made history in more ways than one. Most notably, they advanced to the playoffs—a feat the city’s former arena team, the Forest Dragons, failed to accomplish during their three-season stint from 1997-1999. Beyond that feat, though, the Thunder also established a loyal and passionate fan base. That was especially apparent on July 26, 2014, when 12,848 fans packed into the Moda Center to watch the Thunder’s final regular-season game and became the largest crowd in Portland’s Arena Football League history. The team’s early success is doubly sweet because its roster is packed with local standouts, who are much easier to cheer for than a squad of outsourced tackling dummies.
