The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge
A Christmas Carol is a holiday classic, but have you ever seen the story from Scrooge’s point of view? RISE’s production, tinted with a more comic tone than its Dickensian prequel, sees the miser training litigious wrath upon the very spirits who forced his self-reflection exactly one year prior. Ebenezer Scrooge sues Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future—representing himself, of course, as he’s too cheap to hire a lawyer. Among many other crimes, Ebenezer accuses them of breaking and entering, kidnapping, and slander. As a parade of well-loved characters take the stand, the ghosts’ very existence hangs in the balance. The trial’s twists, turns, and reveals uncover unexpected motives and desires, culminating in a verdict that’s even more surprising than a confetti cannon filled with spoilers.
