MasterWorks Concert Series - Tucson Symphony Orchestra

  • The Strausses and a Young Master (November 6): The young master is someone you may never have heard of—Takuma Itoh, the TSO’s youthful resident composer who was featured on NPR’s “100 Composers Under 40” list. The world premiere of his work, Ripple Effect, complements pieces by two Strausses—Johan’s Die Fledermaus and Zigeunerbaron, and Richard’s Le bourgeois gentilhomme.
  • Moonstruck: Schumann and Schmidt (January 8): Another world premiere cycles onto the schedule in Heather Schmidt’s Lunar Reflections, which grows in power from the first movement or “moon,” “February Snow Moon,” to the last, “July Thunder Moon.” Schumann’s Spring Symphony, completes the evening and the orchestral incantation for the end of winter with an ode to love.
  • Brandenburg, Jupiter, and More Points of Interest (February 5): Bach’s third Brandenburg concerto epitomizes the complex intricacies of Baroque music—and it inspired Stravinsky to create an updated version of the concerto form for his Dumberton Oaks. Mozart’s final symphony, Jupiter, brings the evening home.
  • Mendelssohn’s Reformation (March 4): Magic is in the air as Glinka’s Valse-Fantasie conjures a massive symphony out of a simple waltz. Debussy strikes a cozy note as well in the TSO premiere of Children’s Corner, written for his three-year-old daughter. But in the title track of the night, Mendelssohn ends this season’s MasterWorks series with a cheerful party.
