WaistWatchers The Musical!
The gym is one of the last places you may expect to see people break out into song. But in WaistWatchers The Musical!, the song and dance routine is just as common as lunges and squats. Here, four women bond over their shared struggles with dieting, romance, and aging through the power of parody songs. Old favorites such as ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” and West Side Story’s “Maria” become “Botox Queen” and “Viagra” respectively, and soon one member of the group is singing “I’m Fat and I’m Okay” to the tune of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” as she begins to move towards healthy body acceptance. It adds up to a musical that’s equal parts goofy and heartfelt, with Bill Hirschman of Florida Theater On Stage praising the show’s “darn witty” lyrics and director Dan Kelley telling BroadwayWorld.com to “Be prepared to laugh off a few pounds.”
