The American Theater Company (ATC)—whose productions depict the American experience by illuminating vital social and historical issues—inspires ninth-grade high-school students through its integrated arts education program, American Mosaic. The program teaches theater arts in school classrooms, culminating in a final performance for peers and parents on the ATC stage.
To staff American Mosaic, the troupe recruits and trains artists with experience teaching theater in an urban setting. This year, instructors will collaborate with students in 35 Chicago-area classrooms to study and perform Welcome to Arroyo’s by Kristoffer Diaz. During the six-week sessions, teaching artists instruct students on how to analyze the text and characters and how to connect with them physically and emotionally. While preparing and performing the play, students can improve their communication and critical-thinking skills and can also develop increased self-confidence by performing in front of others. With additional funding, ATC can hire 10 teaching artists to provide the program to 10 additional schools.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help introduce youth to the theater arts. If G-Team members raise $550, then American Theater Company can hire and train a teaching artist to lead a theater program for one ninth-grade class in a Chicago Public School. Each additional $550 raised will fund training for another teaching artist.
