Laurentian Environmental Center (LEC) provides hands-on lessons about math, science, the environment, and outdoor skills in a diverse wilderness environment. Every year LEC invites more than 1,400 fifth- and seventh-grade students from Mounds View Public Schools to a three-day educational retreat, but many students cannot afford the fee to participate in the experience.
LEC aims to fund scholarships for four low-income elementary- and middle-school students to attend the three-day educational retreat with their classmates. Student scholarships include transportation to and from the center, room and board, and an educational program tailored to individual class size and grade level with team-building exercises, outdoor exploration, and problem-solving excursions. Each excursion will include different activities, with fifth- and seventh-grade students exploring the wilderness through mapping and geocaching, learning about beavers and bog ecology, and sleeping in cabins. The Laurentian Journey will teach seventh-grade students about orienteering, survival techniques, and group decision-making in the woods, with time for journaling and reflection.
Join G-Team and donate $8 to help fifth- and seventh-grade students attend an outdoor educational retreat. If G-Team members raise $448, then Laurentian Environmental Center can fund scholarships for four low-income students to attend its three-day excursion with their classmates. Each additional $112 raised will fund a scholarship for another student.
