According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 16 percent of American households with children experience food insecurity or hunger, and 83 percent of children in St. Louis Public Schools qualify for free or discounted lunch. As part of its widespread efforts to address the problem of hunger, Operation Food Search ensures children who rely on food services at school receive nutritious meals during the weekend. The organization currently provides food to 3,000 children in 23 schools in the St. Louis area.
Operation Food Search’s Operation Backpack program distributes nutritious weekend meals to chronically hungry children, as identified by their teachers or administrators. Each Friday for 32 weeks during the school year, each child enrolled in the program discreetly receives a backpack filled with simple recipes, nutrition information, and nutritious food that they can easily prepare and eat at home. Each backpack contains canned fruit, canned vegetables, two cereal items, two entrees, a dairy item, and two healthy snacks, providing enough wholesome food for two days' worth of meals.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help provide nutritious meals for chronically hungry St. Louis children. If G-Team members raise $320, then Operation Food Search can provide two children with backpacks full of healthy food every Friday for 32 weeks during the school year. Each additional $160 raised will fund a school year’s worth of healthy-food backpacks for another child.
