Kids return from basketball camps newly independent, dunking on rivals with confidence and shattering the backboard without asking permission first. Command the court with today's Groupon: for $59, you get $135 toward any of the more than 75 sport and activity camps offered this summer at Joe Dumars' Fieldhouse in Shelby Township.
Founded by Detroit Pistons legend Joe Dumars, Joe Dumars' Fieldhouse relieves students' summer boredom with weeklong mini-camps aimed primarily at children aged 7–14, but with some options for teens aged 15–17. Lay-up artists at Jonas Jerebko’s Summer Hoops Camp absorb sage advice from coaching staff and Jerebko himself, who will stop by to shoot hoops with campers, then show them how to skin and grill the delicious netting ($235). More than eight sports can be studied this summer, including Wee Ball Tee-Ball baseball camp, which drills beginners on fundamentals such as base-running, batting, and efficient peanut-eating ($109+).
At Restaurant 101, white-hatted cooklings prepare meals under the watchful eye of a local chef, who teaches essential restaurant-running techniques such as sanitizing dishes, designing menus, and negotiating with vegetable unions chief among them ($145). Twelve additional Adventure Camps cover subjects ranging from urban legends to amateur rocketry.
Joe Dumars Fieldhouse
Founded in 1994 as a community-based recreation center, Joe Dumars Fieldhouse is a 100,000-square-foot facility that houses sports leagues and camps in addition to an arcade-equipped entertainment center and an indoor/outdoor restaurant. Dumars' value of sportsmanship lives on through league play and pickup games on one of nine basketball courts and in two full-sized hockey arenas. Camps and clinics provide activity-based instruction to little ones, and the entertainment center's mini-golf and mini-bowling areas host small-scale enjoyment without enforcing miniature-shoe rentals. After rigorous activity, guests can head to Joe's Southern Grill, an arena-themed eatery with tables made from the Pistons' NBA-championship basketball court and a kitchen supervised by head chef Bill Laimbeer.
