With the invention of wine, aged grapes finally gained a more dignified second career than shriveling into raisins. Uphold the vine’s venerability with today's Groupon: for $15, you get one admission to the Maryland Wineries Association’s wine-tasting and horse-racing gala event, Decanter, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 16 (up to a $30 value).
Decanter, a portmanteau combining the act of decanting a fine wine with the graceful canter of a thoroughbred, celebrates Maryland's fine-wine crafters at the historic Pimlico Race Course, home of the Preakness Stakes. Sip samples of liquid poetry from 16 local wineries, including Elk Run Vineyards, Knob Hall Winery, and Woodhall Wine Cellars, while cheering on galloping prizewinners such as Winning Prospect, Rocket Fabulous, and Actually a Cheetah. Spectators can peer from the intimate perspective of Pimlico's infield for a heart-pounding view of the 140-acre course and can tender wagers on equine turf and dirt racing. Meanwhile, vendors dish out capital cuisine and display wine- and equine-related arts and crafts, such as a hand-wrought six-bottle caddy perfect for decorating a filly's vacation stable.
Maryland Wineries Association
Maryland Wineries Association curates the abundant spread of wineries and vineyards that dot the state’s landscape, keeping tabs on the more than 400 wines they produce. Holders of the Maryland Wine Passport wind their way through the state’s six wine trails, tracking their progress as they taste vintages and take photos with their favorite vines. The site also keeps track of local wine news and upcoming winery events.
