Matsuyama Japanese Fusion

A playful spirit dances through the menu of Matsuyama Japanese Fusion, most obviously in elaborate maki with names such as Marilyn Munroll (stuffed voluptuously with deep-fried shrimp, crab, and scallops) and the Sushiman Burrito (tuna, salmon, avocado, and crab in a soy wrap). But the creativity at Matsuyama runs more than nori-deep. Small plates add Mexican, Vietnamese and Korean influences freely to the clean flavors of seasonal fresh fish, resulting in combinations including crab-stuffed jalapeño poppers and grilled salmon with mango salsa.

It's not a minimalistic approach, in other words. Chef Song Kim prefers to stock his pantry with a cornucopia of different herbs and other kicky ingredients. The resulting vibe is sophisticated but accessible—in fact, there's even a kids' menu filled with wholesome Japanese meats and veggies instead of Swedish Fish wrapped in rice.

Customer Reviews

Very good service. Dinner combos are very good. Sashimi Hamachi was very good, but tuna was very subpar - definitely previously frozen from a source other than hawaii, mexico or japan. By the way, we were told that this restaurant about the end of Oct and moving to Rockin a few months later. Am wondering how Groupons being sold for this place will be honored.

Met a friend there for lunch, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the lunch special with tempura -- delicious. And I had bought a Groupon, so the price was definitely right :-).
