Like walking a tightrope, good marksmanship requires hours of practice and is twice as impressive during an earthquake. Hone your aim in a stable environment with today's Groupon: for $30, you get 50 clays on the course, 25 clays on the five stand, golf-cart rental, and gun rental at Milford Hills in Johnson Creek (up to a $67 total value). In summer, Milford Hills' sporting clay shooting takes place Thursdays from 4 p.m. to dusk, Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Milford Hills' sporting-clays course serves up verdant vistas and scores of airborne targets to visitors with an eye for the outdoors and an interest in marksmanship. Shooters may begin atop the 2,100-square-foot five stand looking out over panoramic views before taking aim at the offerings of six automatic clay tossers and a trio of 40-foot, projectile-spewing towers. Take to the field course to track down 50 additional clay foes flung from points scattered among 400 acres of Wisconsin wilderness unspoiled by high-rise condominiums or strip malls overrun by teenage sasquatch. Walking or using the included golf cart (subject to availability) to travel between nearly a dozen clay-throwing stations, hunters have ample time to enjoy the lush scenery, reflect on recent triumphs, or discuss the most effective aloe-based remedies for an itchy trigger finger.
After the shooting, aim takers can retreat to Milford Hills' restaurant and bar to target the temptations on the menu of gourmet pub fare and fine-dining selections. Log walls, a stone fireplace, and large windows form the backdrop for an inspiring set of animal trophies, as well as chandeliers constructed from the antlers of deer.
