Fishing is like raising children: both require patience, superiour breath-holding skills, and a pocket full of worms to entice co-operation. Catch your next fishy friend with today's Groupon: for $125, you get a two-person introduction-to-fly-fishing lesson and a fishing excursion at Mountain Fly Fishers in Morley (a $250 value).
Mountain Fly Fishers' expert instructor, John Samms, applies his more than 25 years of line-casting experience to lead pupils of all skill levels in an easy-to-follow fly-fishing course set in the pristine environs of Chief Hector Lake. Student duos begin their two-hour excursions with an hour of instruction on a grassy field, where Samms acquaints them with the basics of fly-rod casting and tips for improving cast length and accuracy. Samms starts things off on solid ground so that students needn't worry about maintaining balance in a rocking boat or maintaining their dignity amid judgmental bullfrogs. Once guests have mastered the mechanical skills of the sport, they gear up with rods and flies provided by Mountain Fly Fishers for an hour on the glassy surface of the lake. Pupils can try out their newly acquired skills on the lake's rainbow-trout denizens while taking in majestic views of the Canadian Rockies and catching glimpses of local avian wildlife and, in the woodlands surrounding the water, the occasional marshmallow-roasting naiad.
