A Chat with Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet and Voice
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
The studio is the only school in the area featuring the Russian Vaganova training method and teachers certified in the American Ballet Theatre’s national training curriculum. The school has been a landmark in Newtown for 40 years and is in its third generation of directly passed-down leadership.
What’s one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
Bring pink ballet slippers, a leotard, pink tights, and hair in a bun. Ballet is both art and sport but is unique in it’s tradition-centered decorum and ritual. By coming dressed like a ballerina, one enters its world of etiquette and class as a first step, exploring the unique artistry of ballet.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I trained at Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet since childhood. I started under its original owner and then trained under her protege. When the position of Artistic Director was offered to me two years ago, I wanted to continue its unique educational and performance-focused role in our town.
What do you love most about your job?
I love watching students learn to express themselves through ballet. They have to work to achieve the technical skills, which teach [students] discipline, excellence, perseverance, and to find their own creativity and expression as well, both which serve to shape the people they become.
