Ice cream is a fickle dessert—it keeps its cool when faced with an army of screaming spoon-holders but melts instantly when greeted by a smiling sun. Explore ice cream's elusive nature with today's Groupon: for $9, you get $18 worth of ice cream at Nitro Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt, with locations in Merrick and Syosset.
A shroud of fog surrounds Nitro Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt's staff members, who employ chilly liquid nitrogen to concoct smooth and thick custom treats—including limited-time Halloween flavors—in a futuristic-themed setting. The creamery—recently featured in The New York Times—invites clientele to experiment with combinations and invent vaccines against brain freeze, using a wide range of flavors and colorings and an unlimited supply of mix-ins. On October 25–31, the freeze fiends at Nitro Ice Cream will concoct horror-themed treats with toppings that include candy bones, gummy bugs, candy corn, and deep-fried ghosts. Ice-cream flavors also receive a ghoulish makeover with playful interpretations of Frankenstein's monster, zombies, and vampires.
The process begins by choosing a base ice-cream flavor such as vanilla, chocolate, or mint, which can be prepared from soy milk, nonfat yogurt, organic ingredients, or sorbet ($4.50 for a regular cup). After choosing the coloring and mix-ins—which include Oreos, Kit Kat bars, and gummy bears—the mad doctors transmute the ingredients into a creamy mélange with an industrial blender and a liberal application of liquid nitrogen, all the while shrouded in a safe-yet-spooky fog.
Nitro Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt will be temporarily closed until March 1. Purchasers may use their Groupon after March 1 and through the expiration date.
