The food was excellent and the service was as well. We sat in the bar area, which was fine with us, as there is a nice ambience in there. The Taverna has been in Lombard for years and we've never been there before. But, now that we've used the Groupon and know how good the food is, we will definitely go back!

What You'll Get

Written by Spencer Nelson, a fourth-grade student at O. A. Thorp Scholastic Academy and an author-in-residence in the 826CHI writing program.

Eating the food of a country you've never been to can be a fun surprise, just like having a cake that was signed by Yogi Berra smashed into your face by your new pet penguin. Have a fun surprise with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of Greek food at Odyssey Greek Taverna. This Groupon is valid at both the Lombard and St. Charles locations.

Odyssey Greek Taverna serves good traditional Greek food in a fancy setting. Appetizer dips like the fava spread from puréed chickpeas ($4.95) or the tzatziki ($5.75) are good for eating or for painting on your face. Or try the half-dozen raw Blue Point oysters ($9.50), which come from the ocean in their shells that are as hard as a coffee cup. Chefs, hungry people, and people celebrating birthdays can enjoy the fresh-cut braised Colorado lamb made with a touch of cinnamon ($14.25). The swordfish souvlaki kebab ($18.50) and its skewer are as sharp as cupid's arrow, or as sharp as a swordfish getting a new haircut. There is also the traditional Greek mousaka, which is layered like lasagna with eggplant, zucchini, potatoes, and ground beef ($12.95), and is as messy as a pig whose mom doesn't check its room. Diners can also eat these meals on the patio—with candles, umbrellas, flowers, and torches—which is as fancy as the hotel down the street wearing a big tuxedo.

About Odyssey Greek Taverna

Odyssey Greek Taverna has two locations, both of which maintain old-world charm with crisp white linens, dramatic pillars, stone-textured cream walls, and interspersed colorful murals. Dinners begin with bites of moussaka, which layers eggplants, zucchini, and potatoes for a multitoned meal that doubles as a cutaway model of the earth's crust. The gyro plate showcases spreads of beef and lamb with pita, tzatziki sauce, tomato, and onions, and warm, flaky phyllo dough wraps around spanakopita —a savory spinach-cheese pie.
