Like Samson, a man's physical strength is directly proportional to the length of his hair, which is why The Beatles spent most of the 1960s crushing classical marble busts with their bare hands. Trade some strength for a new look with today's Groupon to Old South Barber Spa on State Street. Choose between the following grooming and stress-defeating options:

  • For $35, you get an old-fashioned blade shave and stimulating scalp massage (a $60 value).
  • For $45, you get a 60-minute Old South signature massage (an $85 value).

Belying its moniker, Old South Barber Spa is a modern facility where the bountiful charm and amenities of an old-world Southern men’s club are ladled into a historic home’s luxurious confines. Even out lopsided mutton chops and tame neckbeards with the soothing strokes of a blade shave (a $40 value). A barber first lathers the neck and jowls with the finest shaving oils, then performs a double close shave with a straight edge razor before finishing with a soothing after-shave mask to rejuvenate and purify the skin. A stimulating scalp massage (a $20 value) exposes patrons to new levels of relaxation with 15 minutes of pampering for body-toppers overworked from pondering life’s mysteries, such as why so many pigeons want to talk about westward expansion. During 60-minute Old South Signature massages (an $85 value), therapists customize their skillful kneads based on their client's specific concerns, using light to medium pressure. Sip a complimentary beverage as you unwind, or purchase a cigar if you want to thank your specialist via a message written in smoke rings.

Old South Barber Spa is located in a historic three-story home dating from 1794, with 3,000-square-feet of space and private grooming areas. The pleasantly placid atmosphere surrounds visitors in a comforting blanket of rich mahogany, lavish furnishings, and original antique heart pine floors that evoke the drawing rooms of historic gentlemen’s clubs, outfitted with enough blazing hearths and writing desks to sate the appetite of an entire Sherlock Holmes blog collective. Surround yourself in posh décor before strutting out with a strikingly smooth or relaxed mug thanks to today’s Groupon to Old South Barber Spa.

Charleston City Paper readers named Old South Barber Spa the Best Barber Shop for 2010, the Charleston City Paper staff named it Best Hope for Good Male Hygiene, and it's been featured in Charlie:

  • Unlike any spiral-post cuttery we’ve ever seen, this old-fashioned Mecca of barbershops offers a place where any old chump can leave feeling like a million bucks. – Olivia Gossett, Charleston City Paper
  • The best part of this slow, relaxing approach to men’s style and grooming…is the way that it literally resets the day. – Jason A. Zwiker, Charlie

Old South Barber Spa

Belying its moniker, Old South Barber Spa is a modern facility where the charms and amenities of an old-fashioned southern men’s club are ladled into a historical home’s luxurious confines. The shop’s barbers carefully trim hairs and gently shave beards and necklines using hot lather, shave oils, and a straightedge razor; the way it was done in the good old days when all walks to school were uphill on sidewalks made of quicksand. Barbers also treat hands and feet with manicures and pedicures, and pores with facials designed to rejuvenate and brighten skin.

Old South Barber Spa’s pleasantly placid interior, located inside a 217-year-old home, surrounds visitors in a comforting blanket of rich mahogany, lavish furnishings, and original antique heart-pine floors that evoke the drawing rooms of historical gentlemen’s clubs. In addition to banishing split ends to exile in a dustpan, customers may partake in complimentary beverages and shoeshines, and top off their spa experience by visiting the cigar bar, which will also enhance their Groucho Marx impressions.
