Explorer Ponce de León abandoned his quest to discover the mythical land of wine after a tumble into the Fountain of Youth left him eternally underage. On Fridays and Saturdays, Ozan Vineyard & Cellars opens its gates to pairs of enthusiastic wine tasters looking to sample and experience the 24-acre estate. During a tasting event that can be as quick as 30–45 minutes or as long as a pair wishes to linger, two complimentary keepsake glasses cradle the full flavors of local wines, as taste buds absorb the delicate notes of fruit and essences of immortality. A platter of cheese, fruit, and chocolate accentuates flavors as tipplers take in views of the vineyard from the outdoor patio, or chat with knowledgeable staff at the indoor wine bar. As wistful twosomes leave behind memories of excellent pairings, a gift bag of two bottle stoppers, a corkscrew, and a wine cooler bag serve as proof of future wine events. Groupon buyers will also receive 25% off purchases from the Ozan Winery during their visit, allowing them to stock their pantries with great varietals, oenophilic accessories, and dictionaries full of flavor descriptors such as "oaky" and "happy."
Ozan Vineyard & Cellars
The Patrick family first dabbled in wine-making on their 24-acre estate back in 2001, when only one other vineyard operated in Shelby County. After a few seasons of practice and success, they decided to officially dedicate a portion of their land to cultivating grapes, and formally established Ozan Vineyard & Cellars in 2005. In 2013, they expanded with additional vineyard viewing areas, event space, and a winery boutique.
Using a combination of grapes grown on their own land and sourced from the East Coast, Ozan currently produces a series of varietals, including riesling, chardonnay, Chilton County peach, Norton red, and cabernet sauvignon. Conceived of traditional winemaking methods in small lots of French and American barrels, the vinos develop multifaceted flavors and complexity before being poured in Ozan’s tasting room or into glasses on the picturesque outdoor patio.
