Until recently, the only way ravenous art lovers could feast near beloved masterpieces was to crawl inside famous paintings and hope no one detected the diminishing still-life fruit bowls. Dine in full view comfortably with today's Groupon: get $10 worth of food and drink at Palette Café on Museum Drive (a $20 value). Open for lunch only, 11am - 2pm, Monday though Friday.

The Palette Café rests its tasty laurels in the airy glass front atrium of the Mobile Museum of Art, allowing patrons a palatable space to fuel up on morsels in between observing exhibits. Welcoming servers fete lunch-goers with an array of locally produced, fresh ingredients in accessible form with a gourmet flourish. Start off your midday meal with the house-favored Smoked Tomato Bisque ($3.75), a creamy concoction of roasted red peppers and savory tomatoes with the smoldering qualities of a 1940s torch singer. The Vegetarian Panini ($8.95) brings herbivore passion to portabella mushrooms, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, spinach and Brie, lovingly pressing them into a warm sourdough hug, while the cuisine-fused Asian Fish Taco ($12.95) houses a crisp, fresh fillet inside a warm tortilla with a roof of Asian slaw and lemongrass sauce. Answer your thirst's phone calls with a Sparkling Strawberry Iced Tea ($2.95), refreshingly flavored and served in a wine glass while satiating your need for sweet with the Margarita Mousse ($3.95), a semi-frozen scoop of tequila, triple sec and lime-infused whipped dessert poured into a margarita glass and made complete with the spirits of pretzel-encrusted Mariachi musicians.

More than just a delicious and tranquil place for lunch, Palette Café boasts adjacent views of Langan Park and its lake, footbridge, and business casual ducks swimming laps around their water cooler. Soaring windows, cozy tables, and verdant plants add to the bright and inviting ambience of the amiable eatery. Add to that a new selection of wine, a balcony for private parties and a boardroom for business lunches. Owned and operated by Susan Carley, native of Mobile, restaurant industry veteran and self-declared foodie.

Reviews

According to al.com, "food is art" at the Museum of Art's Palette Cafe:

  • The act of preparing food is more an art than a science, with whimsy and a sense of style and proportion as important as cooking times and exact measurements. It is fitting then that the Palette Cafe in the atrium of the Mobile Museum of Art reflects the same flair for the dramatic and eye-catching appeal of a good work of art. – Melissa D. Newton, al.com
