W. B. Yeats, one of the more famous Irish playwrights, famously said that "life is a long preparation for something that never happens." Take a break from your ceaseless preparations with today's Groupon. For $15, you get $30 worth of eats and drinks at the Playwright Irish Pub, a venerable two-story establishment in Herald Square.
When you walk into the first floor at Playwright, you're greeted with a cozy bar lined with stools and televisions. Head to the second-story sports bar for extended seating and even more televisions. Good vibrations flow at the same rate no matter which atmospheric level your group of laddies and ladies chooses. The Playwright is a laid-back combination of sports, tasty Irish-American cuisine, and Irish-Irish drinks that create a relaxing atmosphere for enjoying a good game with good company. Scattered around its two floors are about 80 flat-screen TVs showing sports from baseball to UFC to quidditch. The viewing experience is enhanced with a studio-grade sound system and in-house OTB to further the excitement.
Irish cuisine master and Executive Chef Peadar McNamee spent six Dublin years (equal to roughly .79 Earth years) inside a thatched cottage crafting and perfecting the restaurant's Irish American–inspired menu. Start with a sharable appetizer such as jumbo Gulf shrimp cocktail ($10.50) or potato skins ($9.50). Equip your finger-spines with a burger, sandwich, or wrap ($10.25–$14.75) or graze from more traditional Irish fare. Satiate your palate with some bangers and mash ($14.75), shepherds pie ($15.25), or fish 'n' chips ($15.50). If your appetite is feeling hefty, unsheath your sword and feed yourself a meatier entree like a poached filet of salmon ($20) or 12-ounce New York strip steak ($22). Mix and match meals with heady libations for a tasteful pairing of belly-filling eats and brews-a-plenty.
