Ice is nothing more than water that won't let people swim in it; such stubbornness deserves comeuppance in the form of sharp metallic blades that merrily criss-cross to and fro across the frozen surface. Show the hard water who's boss with today's Groupon: for $15, you get four ice skating admissions and four skate rentals at the Ralph Walker Ice Skating Rink, up to a $36 value. This State Street skating rink is protected from the elements and offers invigorating exercise paired with plenty of public session times. Smile as wee loved ones skitter across the ice toward your be-gloved, waiting arms, or take a date and skate to impress with your lush lutzes, toe loops, and axel roses. Snacks and drinks are available in the concession area, and funny padded pants are strongly encouraged.
The Ralph Walker Skating Rink was mentioned by the Stamford Advocate:
- To the hockey uninitiated, it's called the Ralph Walker Ice Skating rink. To the diehards who first got their skating legs there, however, it's just called the Blake rink. Tucked into the far corner of East Rock Park in New Haven, the Blake rink is an open-air slab of ice that takes you back in time. While there is a roof over the rink itself, the sides are wide-open to the elements, and when Caitlin Cahow was just getting her hockey career started, the place was not much more than wooden boards and chicken wire in place of the current Plexiglas panels. And on some really windy and wintery days, snow would blow in through the openings and form drifts in the corners of the rink. To Cahow, it was like skating in heaven. – Chris Elsberry, Stamford Advocate
