About Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium
Imagine 200,000 galaxies, spread across one billion light years of space. In most places on Earth, exploring those galaxies remains one of humanity's most ambitious dreams; at the University of Louisville's Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium, it's something that happens every day. During shows at the SciDome, visitors enter a massive theatre, where the secrets of the known universe's most notable phenomena are revealed. The immersive experience is helped along by some impressive technology, from the HD projection system and computer-modeled imagery to a sound system capable of pumping out 15,000 watts of pure sound.
Engaging shows are just one facet of the planetarium's mission; the center also partners with the Louisville Astronomical Society, and even hosts laser music shows played in sync with Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and other artists. No matter the reason for their visit, guests of the planetarium honor the future and the past simultaneously; while audiences imagine Voyager's journey of more than three billion miles and dream of a day when humankind will spy the other side of a black hole, they're also experiencing the century-long legacy of Rabbi Joseph Rauch, who led the Adath Israel Congregation for 44 years.
