Clients may choose from Swedish strokes or deep-tissue pressure. During a Swedish massage, therapists employ long, gliding strokes to soothe surface aches, whereas deep-tissue massages hone in on chronic soreness.
River North Massage Therapy Center
Although they wanted to begin a massage center in 1999, Emmanuel and Barb Bistas were wise enough to bottle their dream and let it age. They planned and opened the New School for Massage, Bodywork & Healing instead. It was an investment—there, therapists trained under the Bistas' supervision until the pair became confident in their students' education and expertise. More than a decade later, they realized their initial dream and established River North Massage Therapy Center, employing only licensed graduates from their school.
Today these staff members soothe muscles with 30-, 60-, 75-, and 90-minute massages in various modalities. The smooth, long strokes of a Swedish-relaxation massage, for example, contrast with the pinpointed pressure of deep-tissue work, or the meditative stretching of Thai massage. Private treatment rooms accommodate expectant mothers as well as couples, though therapists can also travel for onsite chair massages and special events.
The center has not relinquished its roots in education, though—it still offers public workshops on massage techniques, and lets relaxation-seekers schedule appointments with supervised student interns. These opportunities allow the New School for Massage's current pupils to practice on clients rather than on scarecrows they found in the dumpster.
