Running was popular in Europe long before it caught on in America, which is why most races are measured in kilometers instead of miles and why most of the Pilgrims were eaten by bears. Race to the top of the food chain with today's Groupon to Run for a Reason on October 8. Choose between the following options:
- For $15, you get entry to the 5K race starting at 7:30 a.m. (up to a $30 value).
- For $20, you get entry to the half-marathon race starting at 7:30 a.m. (up to a $40 value).
Philanthropic running shoes pound USA Track & Field–certified courses in the crisp morning air to raise money for summer-camp scholarships for disadvantaged Topeka community children and teens. Starting at 7:30 a.m., both races tear out of Hummer Sports Park, with the 5K race dashing down to 8th Avenue and back. Meanwhile, the 13.25-mile half-marathon covers a wide circuit around downtown Topeka, skirting Washburn Park before cutting a swathe through Big Shunga Park and the Shunga Trail, as water stations carry out age-old feuds with fire stations. Outfitted in complimentary running shirts, horse-and-chariotless charioteers careen toward the finish line, where medals and post-race refreshments await. The proceeds go to help underprivileged 8–16 year olds spend their summer enjoying the sporting life on the Washburn University campus.
