Horses were once considered man’s best friend, but after the invention of the dog, the horse was rebranded as man’s eccentric, oat-obsessed uncle. Take a journey with the kindest of kinsmen with today's Groupon: for $20, you get a one-hour private horse-riding lesson at Rushlow’s Arabians in Romulus (a $40 value).
For more than three decades, Rushlow’s Arabians' lessons have been instilling horsemanship skills in up-and-coming jockeys of all skill levels ages 6 and up. Experienced instructors will have students trotting around the indoor arena with aplomb during the one-hour private session, spouting off knowledgeably about pony physicality, bronco breeds, and skinny versus baggy jodhpurs. The lessons also cover tacking, leading, mounting, and dismounting, as well as proper etiquette in the presence of noble hoofed creatures. Rushlow’s Arabians employs 12 steeds, most of them retired show horses, ensuring well-behaved equines to show every rider the ropes.
The four trainers and two instructors at Rushlow’s Arabians combine more than 150 years of experience in the equestrian industry, applying their expertise in the areas of breeding, training, and riding. Rather than focus solely on riding techniques in the saddle or trying to teach horses sign language, riders learn the full spectrum of horsemanship, including equine anatomy, proper stall etiquette, and tacking up a horse. Students of all abilities have their choice of instruction in Western, Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat, Driving, and Dressage atop designated lesson horses, most of which have retired from the show ring.
