There was a time when "happy hour" meant you got to live another day. Delight in slightly less fatalistic festivity with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of pub grub and live music at Shiner's Saloon, located downtown at the corner of 5th and Congress (second floor). This Groupon may not be used toward alcohol.
Much like the raucous saloons of the Old West, where grizzled cowboys would gather to play Truth or Dare and give each other makeovers, Shiner's Saloon is outfitted with many a TV and video game, and brings in live music seven nights a week. Hop a cozy squat in one of Shiner's heavy, country-style chairs and be transported to a time of gunslingers, outlaws, and painted ladies, assuming you have time to play Deadwood on the Wii before the next local rock band takes the stage.
Shiner's batwing doors and kitchen stay open every day until 2 a.m., and the saloon's friendly staff will happily add a little laughter and conversation to anything you want off the full menu of down-home appetizers, subs, salads, and tacos. Start by slithering down an order of Shiner's sliders, topped with cheese and pico de gallo on Hawaiian rolls and served with chips ($7), or a warm quesadilla filled with your choice of just cheese ($6), chicken, sausage, brisket, ham, spinach, or turkey ($7). Fresh-baked kolaches come two per order and are stuffed with your choice of innards, including ham and cheddar, turkey and pepper jack, and country sausage and cheddar with or without spicy jalapeños ($5). Keep one hand open for lighter waving during power ballads with a Settler's Feast Thanksgiving Sub (turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, and brown gravy, $7) or a Gold Mine Avocado Sub (tortilla chips, avocado, roasted tomatoes, peppers, and jalapeño ranch, $7). Otherwise, lasso some Southwestern savories such as the Chicken Coop Fajita Salad (grilled chicken, tortilla chips, chili con queso, tomatoes, black beans, roasted peppers, jack cheese, and salsa, $8) and a fistful of soft chicken or veggie tacos ($7 for two), which can be upgraded to a brisket-filled tortilla treat for a half-dollar more.
Everyone can buy up to two of today's Groupon to Shiner's Saloon, so bring your poker buddies along and enjoy a night in the Old West that, for once, doesn't end in a cartoonish saloon-wide brawl set to jaunty piano music.
- They have several big TV's and plenty of chairs and tables to sit at. I love their decor and heavy ranch-y style chairs...The bar menu is unique with a Texan flair - I love the "quesadillas" with brisket in them and they even give you a side of BBQ sauce to dip them in. – TxCarebear, Citysearch
- I've been here several times, on week nights, and have always had a good time. They have live music-diff genres…On the quiet nights-I've enjoyed the convo's with the bartenders-and some of the musicians that played that night. – Indria S., Yelp
