Skylite Cellars owners Tom and Cheryl Hodgins took a unique path into the winemaking business: Tom started out in radio and Cheryl came from a farming background, a combination you'd expect to result in the world's first edible microphone. Instead they started the Smooth Jazz 101.9 radio station in southeast Washington—a noted wine corridor—and, subsequently finding themselves surrounded by friends and family already active in the wine biz, became interested in not only how wine is enjoyed but also how it's made. They finally put wine and radio together to create "The Hiney Winery" radio hour in the 1980s. Their winding, vine-like path to wine culminated in the creation of Skylite Cellars in 2000. Today, they put their efforts toward creating the best wines Walla Walla's soil can muster, including the 2009 Reserve red blend, 2010 Syrah, and 2011 Carmenere, each of which won Double Gold at the 2014 Seattle Wine Awards.
