Proprietor and chef Bob Menendez has been cooking up classic dishes within the charming walls of Sunset 44 Bistro for more than 25 years. After a leisurely look at the dinner menu, guests enliven tongue buds with a snappy starter of Louisiana gator bites ($12) before moving on to appetizing entrees. The Avila stew’s lobster tomato broth hosts synchronized swimmers scallops, salmon, and noodles ($24), and a certified 10- to 12-ounce Angus New York strip steak distracts gossiping incisors with risotto cake and sauce madeira ($32). Layered eats such as the hamburger a la holstein, stacked with a sunny-side-up egg, smoked bacon, and aged cheddar ($12), are easily eaten with your hands or the hands of your imaginary friend. Finish with a decadent dessert such as the chocolate mousse Napoleon ($5 for petite; $9 for regular), or partake of a sip from Sunset 44 Bistro's extensive wine list to complement a meal as well as a top hat and cane complement Mr. Peanut.
