Lots of fun but they try to get money out of you for everything. Had to pay 10 bucks to park in a bumpy field down a pot holed road. Then it was 10 bucks for them to hold stuff for you while you run. The run was lots of fun!

What You'll Get

Like stones with swords stuck in them, races spur competitors to grunt and sweat mightily before achieving a sportsmanlike victory and swiftly beheading their rivals. Jump into the convivial fray with today's Groupon: for $32, you get one adult entry to The Patriot Games 5K Mud Challenge in Sanger (a $65 value). The race is on Saturday, September 24, with waves of racers released every 30 minutes between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m; 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. slots are no longer available.

The Patriot Games 5K Mud Challenge awards an academic scholarship to the first rambunctious racer to hurl him or herself across the finish line of the 3.1-mile race that meanders across a 300-acre course strewn with 18 climbing and stepping obstacles. Post-race, The Patriot Games rewards panting participants with refreshments, a medal of honor, a large beer (for racers aged 21+), and live music all day. Before race day, each mud-splashing contestant must reserve his or her wave, which secures a time slot to sprint through the open plains and lush woodlands, climb plank-lined obstacles, and high-step across treacherously buoyant mounds of man-sized marshmallows. Before the onset of the starting pistol, the Games' staff outfits each aspirant with a T-shirt and a chip, a mini transponder that records racers' times. Organizers encourage comfortable athletic wear, though costumes are welcomed, with contests and prizes for those dressed most creatively or most seamlessly encased within a giant model of Carl Weathers' head.

About The Patriot Games

Male and female competitors climb over rope walls, splash through mud pits, sneak under barbwire, and climb over oversized tires in a goodwill 5K and 10K race. Runners of all skill levels gather at the start dressed however they like, sprinting through the course shirtless or even in mesh smoking jackets. During the 10 a.m. wave, racers are encouraged to don their favorite patriotic garb. Everyone competes at their own pace, and all participants receive a Medal of Honor to hang round their neck upon completion.

Past events have attracted up to 2,100 racers, all of whom are treated to a post-race, beer-filled celebration with live music from local bands. Photographers document the entire event, capturing a portfolio of epic action shots and barbaric yawps. Water stations are peppered throughout the course, and a gear check allows racers to safely stow belongings with a watchful staff member.
