Italy has given us legendary works of art, from the evocative paintings of Caravaggio and da Vinci to the miniature meat sculptures of Boyardee. Admire edible Italian masterpieces with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of Italian fare and soft drinks at The Red Pepper in Summerville.

Chef Jim Giuffre uses fresh ingredients to craft generous helpings of authentic Italian cuisine served in a welcoming dining room or outdoor patio. Pasta dishes abound on the dinner menu, with al dente selections including the lobster-and-ricotta-filled ravioli ($18) and the penne bolognese, which flaunts a slow-simmered sauce of ground beef, veal, aromatic herbs, and veggies ($15). Like kindergarteners at a dairy farm, breaded and fried eggplant slices play hide and seek under thick slabs of mozzarella cheese, as oblivious pasta and pomodoro sauce interrogate suspicious-looking forks ($15). Dough visionaries design their own pizzas ($9+) or invest in classic concoctions such as a classic margarita with tomato, basil, and mozzarella ($14). The chef rounds out hearty entrees, such as beef medallions glazed in marsala wine sauce ($20), with sides of house salad and focaccia bread, ideal for soaking up extra sauce or rolling into a doughy straw for a thirst-quenching soft drink ($2.50).

The Red Pepper

The Red Pepper is an Italian eatery with rich roots. Owner Fred White first learned the ropes of the restaurant business at his grandmother's Italian restaurant in Rochester, New York, mastering the art of crafting sweets and savories from fresh ingredients such as tomatoes, basil, and ricotta cheese. He went on to open lauded eateries across the country, then settled with his family in the Charleston area and opened The Red Pepper in Summerville. Here, locals relish hoagies, pizzas, and other sumptuous New York–style Italian food. Red umbrellas and baskets of flowers dot an outdoor patio, drawing diners into the fresh air for alfresco meals and drinks.

From the Press

  • Charleston City Paper: "Hearty, tasty southern Italian fare in a couple of nicely-dressed dining rooms."
  • USA Today: "The food is homemade and flavorful, and the staff is attentive."
