Basketball has all the fast-paced action of soccer, but its much smaller net is defended by five times as many people, so it's no wonder that all soccer has been permanently canceled. Celebrate the king of indoor sports with today's Groupon: for $99, you get admission to a four-day UNLV Lady Rebels Basketball Day Camp from June 27–30 at Cox Pavilion (a $250 value).
Lady Rebel basketball camps elevate up-and-coming shooters, shot-blockers, and charge-takers through challenging drills, competitions, and individual instruction. Players in grades 2–12 learn the fundamentals of ball handling, rebounding, footwork, and more while perfecting jump shots and tweaking passes. Seasoned coach Kathy Olivier and current members of the UNLV women's basketball team lead the camp, molding shot-clock-regulated students into their desired roles, whether a three-point specialist or hidden-trampoline defender. Camp counselors such as UNLV guard and local recruit Mia Bell encourage an enthusiastic atmosphere. In addition to written evaluations, all participants also receive a UNLV Hoops T-shirt and basketball.
Day camp takes center court at the UNLV Lady Rebels' home base, Cox Pavilion. The arena is part of the Thomas & Mack Center, where Kareem Abdul-Jabbar broke Wilt Chamberlain’s career points record in 1984, a triumph that inspired Abdul-Jabbar to quit basketball and start a career as basketball analyst for C-SPAN 2's congressional pickup games.
UNLV Lady Rebel Basketball Camp
In 2008, a former Lady Rebel All-American returned to her alma mater in a new role: as head coach of the UNLV women's basketball team. Prior to that, coach Kathy Olivier spent 15 years at the helm of the UCLA team. The wisdom she’s accumulated from her years spent guiding young ladies toward their goals on the hardwood are transferred to the next generation of female athletes in youth summer programs. Led by coach Olivier, her staff, and current UNLV players, sessions fill the 18,500-seat Thomas & Mack Center with the sound of whistles, bouncing balls, squeaking shoes, and the cheers of an imaginary crowd of fans and cool dragons. During each energetic workout, staff share their love of the game as they teach passing, dribbling, shooting, and rebounding with group and individual instruction, daily games, and contests.
