Commuting via sailboat has a number of advantages: there are no traffic jams, there are no hitchhikers with hooks for teeth, and if you hit a deer it’s definitely the deer’s fault. Steer clear of mammalian intercession with today’s Groupon to The WaterFront Center in Oyster Bay. Choose between the following options:
- For $60, you get a two-hour Discover Sailing lesson for two (a $120 value). Classes are held from June to September on Fridays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for the schedule.
- For $195, you get a seven-hour Sailing 101 course for two (a $390 value). Classes are held from May to September, alternating Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for the schedule.
A nonprofit dedicated to the promotion and protection of Long Island’s scenic Oyster Bay, The WaterFront Center facilitates safe and sustainable aquatic adventures and instruction on recreational watercraft. A relaxing two-hour Discover Sailing lesson, helmed by a seasoned sailor, ferries passengers aboard a 23-foot Sonar sailboat. During the lesson, the instructor guides fledgling boatswains through rigging, basic terminology and boatspeak, as well as the metaphorical significance of Ernest Hemingway’s sock collection. The brief, fun-stuffed voyage is ideal for couples or individuals curious about sailing or those looking to enjoy an outing on the water. As the keelboat plies through the waves of the picturesque Long Island seascape, apprentice aquanauts can try their hand at steering the vessel or orchestrating basic parallel-parking maneuvers.
Today’s second option equips more serious students with seven hours of comprehensive oceangoing instruction without the kraken-wrestling required by a full sailing-certification course. During the full-day jaunt, your seadog sensei leads you through the basics of operating the 23-foot keelboat. Acquire the aquatic knowledge of preparing to set sail, tying knots, freeing yourself from knots, points of sail, and wind awareness as you navigate the earth’s most capacious birdbath.
All programs with two or more people can be booked at their convenience if none of the prescheduled dates work.
The WaterFront Center
The future of Oyster Bay is in good hands with The WaterFront Center, a nonprofit U.S. Sailing–accredited facility that teaches both youths and adults to conserve their local environment. In addition to demonstrating the importance of environmental responsibility, the center also instills sailing skills in people of all ages, from their Lil’ Luffers class for third and fourth graders to US Sailing certification for those ready to take the boat out on their own. For corporate groups, they teach a different kind of lesson out on the water with outings designed to teach team development or effective communication. The WaterFront Center also rents sailboats and kayaks to veteran boaters or trustworthy gusts of wind.
