After Capri Sun began creepily transforming people into amorphous metallic globules, wine rose to prominence, offering a similarly complex flavor profile without the threat of spontaneous melting. The Spring Wine Tasting showers palates with a cascade of more than 300 wines, allowing oenophiles to stock up on ambrosia for the summer season. Varietals hail from all over the world, creating more harmony among grape products than a California raisins reunion concert. Live jazz provides a vivacious backdrop for the VIP tasting, which offers more than 70 additional high-end wines than in the Grand Tasting, where sommeliers pour more than 150 signature vinos. Guests can accompany their wine with bites of bread and cheese at both tastings, which are structured in a promenade style that promotes exploration and eliminates spontaneous games of musical chairs. As they sip, ticket holders are privy to information about the varietals, including where the grapes grow, what cuisine pairings work best with libations, and which go-go boots were worn when the grapes were squashed. VIP imbibers receive a commemorative wine-glass holder, though all guests may purchase any of the event’s wines at special rates via Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits. and its founder, wine expert and PBS television host Mark Phillips, enlighten budding oenophiles on the intricacies of wine tasting through a variety of media, including online classes, events, Phillips' book Swallow This, and his TV show. His sundry lessons teach devotees valuable vino insights, such as how to get wine to the right temperature, the differences between glass types, and when it's OK to drop ice cubes into glasses of white. Phillips approaches each lecture with a comedic, unpretentious attitude, ensuring that patrons can easily bolster their knowledge of the subject without having to bribe wine-bar waiters.

Customer Reviews

great experience and a lot of fun
Craig W. · June 14, 2013
Mark's class was educational and fun. We learned some new and interesting stuff about wine and wine tasting. We love Belifore, the restaurant it was held at, have been there many times before, food on the buffet wasn't as good as ordering off the menu, but decent value for the minimal additional fee.
