In a proper tasting, wine must be held up to the light to gauge its color, tossed on a cat's back to judge its acidity, and sipped through a crazy straw to annoy the host. Become the toast of any tasting with today's Groupon: for $50, you get two tickets to Wine Walk, The Red Affair on Saturday, October 22 (a $100 value), a benefit for the New Vista charity.
New Vista wines, dines, and serenades guests during a rose-colored benefit for the developmentally disabled. Las Vegas performers moonlight as sommeliers to pour wines such as Langtry's Guenoc Cabernet Sauvignon and the St. Francis 2006 Rockpile Red blend, as bartenders disguised as showgirls furtively try to mix cocktails and open dark beers with their tail feathers. Rick's Cafe contributes New American cuisine to a roster of 15 restaurants donating their reddest edibles, including Half Shell Seafood, Texas de Brazil, and the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Bidders can compete in a silent auction, and electric string quartet Phat Strad soundtracks the revelry, while crimson-clad partiers slow-dance with handsome suitors or their complimentary raffle ticket.
From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., guests revel amid cobblestone streets and piazzas reminiscent of an Italian lakeside village, after which point a designated driver will chauffeur them home in their own hovercrafts. All proceeds from the tasting benefit New Vista, an organization dedicated to helping developmentally disabled adults and children achieve independence through quality housing, support services, and naval blockades against the Redcoat army.
New Vista Community
A nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities, New Vista Community hosts festive fundraisers throughout the year. Savvy to the pulse of the community, event organizers throw raucous events such as wine walks, which regale guests with the foolproof combination of fine food samples, wine and cocktails, and live music. Guests at the Brew's Best Hand-Crafted Beer festival sip free samples of regional brews. Though many in the community may know New Vista Community primarily for these events, the organization dedicates its best energies to help those with disabilities. Founded in 1984 by three sets of parents with intellectually challenged kids, the charity provides group homes, assisted living, job training, and field trips to kids and adults.
