A sun salutation, unlike a bath of corn flakes or a shouting match with the neighborhood rooster, is a healthy way to start the day. Learn to greet the dawn with grace using today's Groupon: for $25, you get 10 yoga classes at The Yoga Room of Redlands (a $110 value).
Owners Daniel and Shawna Head of The Yoga Room of Redlands lead a staff of instructors in instilling stress-relieving yoga skills into practitioners of all levels. A full schedule of more than 30 weekly classes spans all seven days, and includes a nonheated Beginner class with a gentler, slower pace. Daniel's black belt in combined martial arts aids him in overpowering rebellious yoga mats and teaching the power system, an intense form of yoga performed in a warmed or hot room to sculpt the body and calm the mind. The heated Level 1–2 Power Vinyasa and Yin class begins with a 45-minute deep stretch that improves mobility and apple-picking skills, followed by a one-hour rigorous flow in which students move from one pose to the next, emboldening muscles with balance-testing transitions. For a challenging workout, yogis push their physical and mental limits with the heated All Levels Power Vinyasa class, which glides from one posture to the next, focusing on the breath and incorporating longer holding of poses to improve stamina and cause nearby David statues to do double takes.
The Yoga Room recommends that limb lengtheners arrive to their first class 10–15 minutes early, and that individuals bring towels and water bottles. Yoga mats are available for purchase at the facility, and double nicely as welcome mats for houseguests known to be arriving with sore feet.
The Yoga Room of Redlands
The instructors at The Yoga Room of Redlands take time to build toward peak poses. They begin by modeling basic movements that warm bodies from the inside out. As muscles and connective tissues gain mobility, teachers introduce more-rigorous postures such as chair, which mimics the action of sitting down on Santa's lap. Students build up to the peak pose—a posture that's intensely challenging and rewarding—and then cool down through a sequence of curative, relaxing movements.
Throughout each of the Power Vinyasa–style classes, teachers tend to students as individuals, offering modifications and adjustments to make poses more comfortable. They also add upbeat music to brighten the mood.
