Very good hotel, fantastic island. Staff were always polite and helped in organising our itinerary, e.g. calling the gokarting, as our Portuguese was not up to scratch! Food in the restaurant was excellent, both when we ordered food in the evening and the breakfast buffet. Having the levada running through the resort is a great asset for trips out without the car. The first bungalow we were in was below the tree line and next to the levada so this meant people walking right passed. We asked to move and we're moved to one with a spectacular view over Funchal. Shame about the barking dog next door but can't blame the hotel for it as barking dogs are an island-wide problem. There is so much to do on Madeira that we'll definitely return and would certainly consider Choupana Hills again but would be picky over which bungalow we stayed in.

A delightful hotel experience We are not usually visitors to large spa hotels but Choupana hills was fantastic. Benefitting from a commanding spot over looking Funchal and the Atlantic the views were spectacular from our individual chalet styled apartment. Breakfast and dinner were both fantastic and all staff went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Some examples are as follows: The spa facilities were delightful and turned on for us at any time of day or night. They arranged for a local mechanic to come to the hotel and fix our hire car for very little cost. One observant member of staff realised it was my birthday from passport at check in and surprised me with champagne and cake putting my wife to shame. Fantastic stay-thank you

Wonderful stay Fantastic stay. We came with high expectations we were not disappointed. The staff were excellent, always helpful and polite... nothing too much trouble. Quality of the breakfast and the restaurant was very good and we ended up taking evening meals 5 out of 7 nights in the resort. Facilities were good and pool area always very clean and well maintained. As seen in some other reviews there can be some noise from barking dogs but I really don't see what could be done about that... also it was not to a level that affected our enjoyment. We hope to be back some time and have already recommended Choupana to our friends. Other stuff - Road up the hill is very steep so choose an appropriate car, restaurant booking process could be easier and a no-smoking policy for the restaurant (outdoor terrace) would be nice. Lounger cushions nearly ready for replacement.... I recommend hiring a car and spending a couple of days exploring the island! Congratulations and thank you to the staff and management for making our stay memorable for the all right reasons! (Stayed 9th - 16th July 2016, room 54)

Fantastic! We visited Choupana Hills for the first 2 nights of our honeymoon on Madeira. Upon arrival we knew we'd made the right choice, the staff were friendly and inviting and the welcome drink was a lovely touch. We were staying in a beautiful sea view room with a lovely balcony and four poster bed! A great and luxurious start to the honeymoon. The entire hotel is of such a high standard throughout, beautifully and tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. With a lovely beach resort/private villa feel to the individual buildings for the rooms. We ate lunch by the pool on the first day, and must say the food is very very good. The lunch menu ranging from €7-€14 was of a very high standard and much better than anywhere else of a similar price. Which is a massive plus as it meant we could stay and enjoy the hotel as there aren't very many other places to eat without a long walk/taxi ride. We then booked for dinner at the sea view restaurant for the evening. I must admit sometimes the service was a little slow for our liking, and we were sometimes left a bit too long without anything to drink/not even ordered. However yet again the food more than made up for this, beautiful well thought out main meals fit for any top range restaurant. Also again very reasonable for the standard of food. The next day we booked a massage in the spa and we cannot thank Isobel and Daniella enough for our truly relaxing massages (a rare honeymoon treat!) they were informative and friendly and the massage was to die for! Choupana is real 5 star luxury and a must visit for a relaxing stay in the hills with a fantastic view over Funchal. Thank you, Emily and Tom

Very relaxing break with helpful staff and great food This hotel was excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful and they made a real effort over my special birthday celebration. The food at the restaurant is fantastic, especially for the evening meal and the views are superb. The hotel is at the top of a very steep hill so it can be a little chilly in the morning and into the evening (so take a cardigan or sweater) but the location makes the hotel in many ways. The drive up and down is not for the faint hearted but it does mean that the views are excellent and the hotel is quiet. A fantastic hotel to truly relax in. If they banned smoking it would be perfect.
