Stranded in random blizzard I originally reserved a room for Thursday night but the snow storm took a nasty turn and shut down the highway I take home (60 miles from my job). I called the hotel and asked if there was any way I could switch my reservation to "tonight" (Wednesday night) with about an hour until check in. No questions asked and no extra charge the lady switched it. I ended up having to stay two nights anyway but the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating! Check in was fast also. The building is old and a little run down. It's a historic city with little "updated" buildings. However the two rooms I stayed in were really nice, and upgraded to be charming. I will not even second guess staying here in the future. If you want 5 star you're not going to get it here, but I think it's perfect. It's 100 yards from the police station so definitely safe! And there is a Perkins about 50 yards away. I'm glad I didn't listen to the reviews and gave the place a chance. For less than $60 you can't expect the Hilton, but you can expect a friendly welcome, a comfortable bed and TV.

Don’t Book Ahead! My sweet daughter tried to book rooms in advance for graduation and did so months ahead. When we arrived, I was charged well over $800 for two small rooms with one bed in each for a 3 day stay. It was clean. Not much to recommend beyond that. The cost was very discouraging. It was so inflated compared to the price I found when researching it. There has to be some way to make the cost of the rooms when booking in advance closer to the advertised price. The hotel owner was not able to budge. What an unpleasant experience. No one feels good about being charged over double the price for a budget motel room.

Go somewhere else even if you have to drive miles in a blizzard. I will NEVER stay in this hotel and I encourage you to pass on by and go somewhere else too. There are many nice places with integrity and happy, bright energy in other cities very near Northfield where you will have a much nicer experience if you can't find another hotel right in Northfield. I visited Northfield on a weekend when all hotel rooms were full due to an event at one of the colleges and a blizzard. I searched online and this hotel was the only one left in town which I confirmed after making a few phone calls. The online service said they only had one room available so my daughter and I, traveling from out of state and again in a blizzard, quickly called and reserved it arriving just a few minutes later to check in. A gentleman was in front of me having an issue with his room and I asked him what was going on. The gentleman said the heat wasn't working and a lamp in his room was falling over so he was trying to get it resolved. I thought, uh oh, but I needed a room. I checked in and went to our room wondering what I would find, but knowing it would just be for one night. When I went into the room it was freezing cold. I attempted to turn on the lights next to the beds and the lamp and none of them worked. I wondered if they weren't changing the light bulbs or something. I looked for light switches in case they were connected to a light switch and couldn't find any. Most importantly, the room smelled like smoke. I am allergic to smoke so I was distressed that I would need to smell this all night. I did not have us move our things in and felt under stress that there wasn't another room in town and that the room was dark and smelled and it was blizzarding. I wasn't sure what to do. My daughter and I decided we would rather sleep in our car in the blizzard than in that smelly, dark room even for one night. I called the front desk asking if I could get a refund because of the lights and smell of the room. This was only one hour after I made the booking and checked in. The front desk lady said she couldn't refund me and that I would need to talk to Dan, the manager the next morning. The next morning, I called Dan and he said because I didn't give them 48 hours notice, that he couldn't refund me and that he went up to the room and the lights were working fine - Absolutely NOT true when I was there the night before. The lights were NOT working the night before and he didn't have anything to say or care about the smell. He said their computer had already processed the payment (remember I actually requested the refund the night before) and that they had other rooms and didn't the front desk person offer one to me. NO - the front desk person did not offer one to me plus I hadn't even booked the room 48 hours in advance - it was one hour before I requested the refund and then the lady told me I couldn't get a refund until the next day. If you want to stay somewhere where people do business this way - not taking good care of their customers and not caring about doing what is right then go ahead but as I said before, this hotel will NEVER get my business. I told Dan I would be sure to let people know what happened to me so that's why I am posting here. I would stay anywhere else and drive miles away in a blizzard which is what I did before I would even consider staying at this hotel. Good luck with your travels. Choose another place if you are smart.

What a strange dark hotel! Like other reviewers here, Americas Value Inn, was the last place available in Northfield. When we decided to visit our granddaughter at Carleton for Family Weekend, we mistakenly thought we would have plenty of options booking 2 months in advance. Big mistake. Never again! First off, the place is very dark. We actually drove by it, thinking it was an empty building. Very few lights in the hotel and in the parking lot. No elevators. The staff are really weird people. Plus, they could care less about your comfort. The ice machine was broken in the hallway and soaking water covered the carpet. I had to jump over it every time I walked by. Breakfast is almost non-existent.... a few bananas, packaged muffins and weak coffee. We lucked out on our room. Although it initially smelled like cigarette smoke, it was okay after we aired it out. It was clean and big.

Not recommended for anyone! The 1st room that the evening clerk offered had a hole with dark moisture on the edges in the bathroom wall, paint peeling off walls, and looked shabby. The 2nd room was also shabby, had paint peeling off the walls, the bed was not well-made or tidy, and the room only had 1 dim light in the corner. The wall A/C unit was connected to a power strip which was hanging mid air to reach the electrical outlet. The lobby coffee machine was out of order. When I said I didn't want to stay, the clerk said there is a 48 hr cancellation policy so I had to pay for a night. However, there is no way that I know if the room meets minimum standards before seeing it! I did NOT stay there. When I returned the next morning to talk with Dan, the manager, he said my money couldn't be refunded.
