Hotel Alex is a great gateway to the parks! Hotel Alex was a 5 on all levels. Check in was expedient, all staff super friendly and accommodating, and the facility was clean and nicely appointed; despite being extremely busy by large tour groups. We opted for an upgrade to the presidential suite which was huge. Drinks on the rooftop each night was great and a dinner at Vertex divine. The onsite Starbucks is super convenient and we loved using the Peloton bikes in the gym. Location to a few downtown eateries is also very convenient and our favorite was Delmonico. Using Hotel Alex as a base to Badlands, Custer and Mt Rushmore is very convenient. They are extremely dog friendly.

Comfortable Stay The hotel was very charming, the rooms were comfortable and their staff kindly accommodated me when I needed to store my suitcase and bags since I arrived before check-in and the room wasn't ready. Check-in was super easy, I used the app and it had a digital key. The hotel is in the middle of some restaurants and shops with a pub attached. I had a 5:45 am flight and was unaware that I needed to book a shuttle with the hotel in advance, I wasn't aware of the shuttle at all because it said it wasn't available on the app, I would recommend asking for anything in person, they are helpful. If you have an early flight make sure to work out your ride, unless you are renting a car. I called a taxi ahead of time and it canceled 15 minutes before my scheduled pickup, but Lyft came in a few minutes, I might have just had some good luck on that because it seemed like there were not many options. Other than that I would recommend this hotel.

A quirky hotel in the heart of Rapid City What a quirky hotel which we thoroughly enjoyed in Rapid City. Great location, our room was spacious (I think we were lucky), comfortable, clean and quiet. The foyer was gorgeous. The only let-down was the restaurant due to being understaffed however this is a world-wide problem after COVID and the staff did the best they could in these circumstances.

Disappointed We stayed at the Alex J just before covid and enjoyed our stay, but this time we were very disappointed. I understand that the hotel is old and historic, but they aren't keeping up with repairs and maintenance. Our room was in need of new carpet, the walls and baseboards were banged up and the overall feel was tired and grundgy. The towels were also worn out and the room gave a vibe that made you not want to hang out any longer than necessary. We went to the roof top bar and that also gave us an unwelcome vibe. We didn't have a single server ask if we wanted anything and the tabletop fires weren't going, making that entire area dark and boring. The location is great, close to parks, pubs and restaurants, that sadly is the only positive thing to say about it. Until some renovations and refreshments are complete, this hotel is an overpriced disappointment.

Rude Staff, Tiny Rooms, Swastikas Everywhere. NOT a 4-Star Hotel. I am a Hilton Diamond member, so staying at Hilton hotels is normally a priority and preferred. However, my experience at the Alex Johnson was so poor that I checked out after the first night of what should have been a three night stay. The hotel staff was rude, the hotel was filthy (for example, the same food/empty plates and cups that were in the hallway when I checked in Tuesday afternoon where still there when I checked out Wednesday morning). I was given a room that was TINY. When I asked if I could move to a larger room via my Diamond member upgrade OR to pay for a larger room, I was told the by hotel staff that the hotel was completely sold out (they never looked up from the book they were reading when they said this to me by the way). Unsurprisingly, when I walked away and looked online, there were not only rooms, their were suites available. Also, there were swastikas all over the lobby - floor and chandeliers. I understand the symbol meant something else during the launch of the hotel. However, the hotel has been renovated in its nearly 100 years of existence. In this day and age to continue to have that symbol on prominent display throughout the hotel is shocking and appalling.
