Quaint, Vintage Hotel I stayed at the Steinhart while traveling for work, and it was just fine for what I needed. It is vintage, and definitely could use some updates. However, it is quiet and has modern TVs and appliances in the kitchen. The front desk staff is very nice. However, they are only here from 8-5 each day, so if you're looking for a place with a 24 hour front desk this may not be a good choice. Housekeeping is done every Monday, so that took some getting used to. However, they vacuum the floors and will clean your dishes so that makes up for the infrequency. I slept well, as the hotel is very quiet. It's on a nice street and is located between the Tenderloin and Knob Hill neighborhoods. If you are looking for a quiet, no frills hotel for a long term stay I would recommend it. But if you're looking for the typical hotel experience you may want to look elsewhere.

Great hotel/ apartment in San Francisco Loved this darling apartment/hotel in San francisco- great place to stay especially if you are in the city for an extended period of time. Front desk service is always helpful, and available 24/7. Wifi is fast, good space within the hotel (I stayed in the one bedroom apartment/hotel), with appliances that make u feel right at home, plus there is laundry available in the basement. It's a little far out from Union Square, a good 15 min walk- but hey, u can't have everything, and nothing beats a good exercise in the morning, and evening! Will definitely stay again-

A Beautiful Hotel With Near Perfect Location Reason for Travel- Roadtrip Holiday with Partner Location - A very short walk away from Union square which contains some lovely restaurants and is pretty much a hub for all things tourist. For Fisherman's Wharf i recommend getting the tour bus tickets for a day from union square (Big Bus etc) to get over there as the direct walk required walking up and down some very steep hills. The hotel is quite close to the Tenderloin which is apparently a no go at night area but so long as you don't stray too far away you will be fine and we never met any unsavory people. Parking- No parking directly available, don't let this dissuade you though as there are some nearby garages that you can pay an allotted time to stay at (a week didnt cost me much more than 100 dollars). Not sure how safe these are if you want to keep your car 100% safe though but this really isn't a problem with the Hotel so i wont discuss it further. Hotel and Room - What a beautiful room. Felt like i was living in an apartment for a week. The rooms get cleaned once every 5 days which really wasn't a problem. The suite also has a kitchen which while not new was serviceable. Lovely bed, lovely bathroom, spacious. All round a pretty perfect suite. The hotel has an old style to it that i really liked, this can also be seen in the old style elevators that they have. The hotel doesn't really offer much else though. The staff were very friendly and explained the area for us. The wifi was also fine. Overall i would definitely recommend the Steinhart to anybody looking to explore San Francisco (They only accept bookings of 5 days or more however) (September 2014)

Great hotel with character I stayed in this hotel for a couple of weeks while my wife was working in SF. If you're looking for a modern hotel, this is not it. If you're looking for something with character, definitely check this one out. The elevator alone, as noted in other reviews here, is a classic, with the old-style metal folding gate. The room was clean and reasonably spacious, with a small but very usable kitchenette. And the location is great; walk up the hill and you've got the amazing San Fran views.

Disappointing stay despite the convenience The place is not all bad, however, i had a couple of disappointing incidents in a one night stay which will not make me return again. The room i ended up in looked nothing like the pictures they have (including the one up here) and didnt even look like it was in the same hotel all together. I ended up with a tiny studio that had a worn out and uncomfortable Murphy bed (a pull down bed) with terrible yellow lighting and brownish wall color and one dim window in the corner. After getting over the disappointment in the size and condition of the room, i pull down the bed to find a giant circular stain right in the middle of the sheet and several stains all over the pillow cases. I called the front desk and eventually i was brought a new sheet which i had to change myself for the bed and no replacements for the pillow cases or any kind of an offer to make it up. pros: - Location - Price (if you dont book directly from their site) - Good showers - Lots of character Cons: - Inconsistent - Sheets and covers were not appropriate with stains on them. - Bed not comfortable at all. - No parking available or a discount for a nearby garage. - Service was bad - Sleeping space was tiny
